Chapter twenty-two

I looked over, and both Bel and Che were similarly angry. Not good if we are all over the edge with this.

I began to gain control of my hatred and anger and turned around to look at Hutheen. Her face was also a mask of intensity, her eyes fierce and fur covered face a slight tinge of red with her Warrior heart.

This was not good, but served to help me slow down my heart rate and calm myself a bit. Just a bit.

Bel’s pointed ears were set almost flat back against his head, his usual reaction when going into battle.

I looked out at the swiftly receding halo.

“Petraal, how are you all doing back there? Are you all okay?”

It took her several moments to respond, “Yes, Captain Derek, we… are fine.”

She paused and added quietly, “We were able to record the impact data and the… responding beam you fired.”

I nodded, looked out at the view screen and then at Bel and Che, “Look everyone. This is not how I wanted to test our ship, but it looks like your work is perfect. The screens held tight, the particle beam fired perfectly and accurately. Your new mounts made the firing less harsh. So, those are all successful.”

I paused to breathe and unclench my teeth, “We continue. We’ll move out and try a short Jump anywhere outside. Bel, can you set that up? Somewhere into clear space so we can measure, velocity, insertion, exit and placement.”

He nodded, still slightly flushed but coming around, “Derek, I am ready.”

“Jump now.”

He tapped one icon and the star field shifted slightly. He paused, his fingers hovering over his console, “We did a micro… only about one light year out. Even with the gravity well, we are… within twelve kilometers of our Jump target.”

Petraal added, “Derek, given our position in the gravity well, I’d say that is enormously accurate since accuracy will improve the further out you start.”

My breathing was coming back to normal, “Good, we know our transit, defense and threat systems work, how are the environment, communication and internal systems looking?”

Petraal responded, “Please hold for a moment, we are trying to tune the lateral control thrusters on the right side.”

“Do you need us to stop? We are drifting right now.”

“Drifting is fine… ‘just give us a couple of minutes to correct this bracketing thrust-er.”

We all waited and I couldn’t help thinking about the pirate and her crew at the point of trying to take bounty just to survive and eat. At least she had a ship and crew, so many beings did not even have that. So much hopelessness with the end of the Slave War and so many hard fighting veterans with no work to do and no place to sleep.

“Derek, we have it locked. Continue.”

We did exactly that for the next nine and a half hours, testing, re-testing and testing again until Petraal, Hutheen, Che and Bel were all satisfied the ship and systems performed as they designed and intended.

But all of the primary testing was done to their combined satisfaction.
